Jason Cornell is recognized as a HealthierFeds Leader for having a direct, positive impact on the health and wellbeing of Sailors in his Squadron, and for embracing a healthy lifestyle that serves as a model for others.

Commitment to Self

Jason Cornell embodies the Navy’s "Right Spirit" program, which deglamorizes alcohol. In addition to being a non-smoker, Petty Officer Cornell consistently scores an "outstanding" on the Navy fitness testing. His military bearing and fitness are second to none, and he wears his uniform with pride – showcasing the benefits of his healthy lifestyle.

Commitment to Others

Jason Cornell's regular duties as an in-flight technician are demanding and require frequent deployment; in spite of that he maintains a high level of physical fitness and takes the time to lead the squadron fitness program - in his "off time!"

In the last year he built an aggressive physical training program for the 500 sailors in his squadron, after a number of them failed the minimum fitness standards set by the Navy. With this program, members of the squadron made significant, measurable improvements in fitness test scores. Those improvements include a 77% reduction in the percent reduction in failures, and an increase of 67% in the number of persons scoring "outstanding"; the highest possible score.

Petty Officer Cornell personally arranged for squadron members who needed assistance to see nutritionists, and medical staff, and followed their progress with them. He made environmental changes at the work place that include a highly visible "wellness board" putting easy to use, applicable health information in an accessible place and working with the local snack bars and cafeterias to provide more healthful eating choices. Taking professionalism to the next level, he guided additional staff to become qualified as "command fitness leaders." Under his leadership the expanded staff now offers 14 exercise sessions per week including sessions for those who work night and evening shifts.
